This one is a gem\u2026a true gem and while it commonly happens to all of us yet we seem never to learn from it and keep repeating it over and over in our life. The only way, I learned in my life to keep something a secret is to keep it to yourself\u2026..simple!!! And the most idiotic thing to ever do is to share it with someone else and then say \u201cplease don\u2019t tell anyone\u201d\u2026\u2026duh!!!<\/p>\n

A few months back I was making an overseas trip for a possible assignment and naturally I did not want to share it with anyone till the meeting fructified. Nothing secretive about it but then I normally would like to avoid the mostly nagging follow up questions. In India we have a cultural practice not to share with anyone that the husband wife duo are expecting a baby till the first 3 months\u2026\u2026that is normally the most sensitive period\u2026\u2026same logic.<\/p>\n

But then there was this necessity to share it at least with someone in the family such that they knew about my whereabouts in the event there was some emergency. In the rare event that anything untoward happened during my journey and no one would be aware was a situation I did not want my family to be exposed to\u2026..so I decided to share the details with my wife aka CNN.<\/p>\n

Giving her the details of the proposed trip and the many questions that followed I made that stupid remark\u2026.<\/p>\n

Me – \u201cPlease\u2026.kisse ko nahin batana (Please\u2026.don\u2019t tell anyone) \u201cand we can inform when the meeting has fructified and at the appropriate time\u201d.<\/p>\n

Wife \u2013 \u201cHaan haan\u2026.mein kyo kisse ko batane lage\u201d? (Yes of course\u2026\u2026why would I tell anyone?)<\/p>\n

Me \u2013 \u201cPakka?\u201d (Sure?)<\/p>\n

Wife \u2013 \u201cHaan bola na\u2026.bharosa nahin hai kya?\u201d (I already said\u2026.don\u2019t you trust me?)<\/p>\n

Not more than 48 hours later my daughter popped the question to me \u201cPa, why did you not share with me that you are planning to make an overseas trip?\u201d Now I don\u2019t like to lie and especially to my children so I had to spill out the story though keeping some of the details with me. Another 48 hours later the proposed trip was known even to my in law\u2019s having passed through several channels to reach there.<\/p>\n

There was no need for me to really categorize this as a secret and the fact that several people came to know about it did not harm whatsoever\u2026..but like I mentioned earlier it is the constant updates that people want post the meeting that gets to me. I guess they are asking for an update in earnest but the dialogue can sometimes and in my case many a times go in the following manner\u2026..<\/p>\n

Wife – \u201cKya hua\u2026..meeting kaise thi?\u201d (How did the meeting go?)<\/p>\n

Me \u2013 \u201cBahut acche thi\u201d (Quite good!!)<\/p>\n

Wife \u2013 \u201cResult kab tab pata chalega?\u201d (By when will they let you know?)<\/p>\n

Me \u2013 \u201cPata nahin\u2026..do hafto mein, mere khyaal se\u201d (Don\u2019t know\u2026..but I guess in two weeks time)<\/p>\n

Now it\u2019s been six months since that meeting and there is no confirmation either way and yet again and again my wife needs an update every week.<\/p>\n

Wife – \u201cKya hua\u2026..koi khabar?\u201d (What happened\u2026..any news?)<\/p>\n

Me \u2013 \u201cNahin\u2026.aa jayege\u201d (Not yet\u2026.but will come)<\/p>\n

Wife \u2013 \u201cKab\u2026.itna delay kyo? (When\u2026.and why the delay?)<\/p>\n

Me \u2013 \u201cMeri Ma\u2026\u2026mere ko nahin pata!!! (How the hell am I supposed to know?)<\/p>\n

\u2026\u2026\u2026..and the arguments start between us<\/p>\n
